Occasionally my friends and I like to take a trip up to the SU hill, and spend an evening posing as SU students. And every time we find our way to Marshall Street.
For those who have never been, Marshall Street is best characterized by jam packed bars, cool modern casual dinning restaurants, hip overpriced boutiques, there’s also a guy usually playing his guitar on the corner next to Starbucks. Your all American College town, just a bit more compact.
Every time we walk down Marshall Street we pass Insomnia Cookies, it’s always packed, I mean line outside the door. Last time I waited in line about 5 minuets and didn’t move an inch so I gave up. But this particular time it was a little quieter. From door to dough was about 3 minuets or so. When we first walked in I realized that Insomnia must really be all about the cookies! So in tune with the cookies in fact that the workers forgot to clean the windows, or the very narrow walk space that is lined unfolded boxes…
Insomnia does offer a wide variety of cookies, brownies, and what seems to be an ever rotating variety of flavored frozen yogurts. All of which you can top with anything from peanuts to gummy bears.
I will have to admit that I almost walked out again when I looked at their displays and I thought that was what I was going to be served. But I figured I’d hang in there and find out what all the rave was about. S’mores and snikerdoodle were the cookies featured that particular night but I decided I try my favorite cookie…oatmeal raisin, with a side of frozen yogurt (vanilla w/ caramel fudge)…ordered separately from the advice of my friend (who should be a financial consultant) which cost me about $4 and saved me about $o.75 or so…To my delight my cookie came out very warm and fresh (nothing at all like the display). My friend decided to pass on the cookies and got a frozen yogurt (vanilla on the top and chocolate pudding on the bottom). We both agreed that the vanilla was quite tasty. But both of the chocolate based yogurts left much to be desired. Jessica’s actually words were
“do you taste something funky?”
We did have a great time sitting in their only dinning area. A corner with a great window for people watching. Stuffed with a minni van bench seat for two and a small table covered with newspapers (no need for coasters) and decorated with a pile of empty boxes.
Overall my experience at insomnia cookies left much to be desired but if you have a taste for home baked cookies and you’re away from home (which most college students are) head to Insomnia Cookies, just close your eyes before you walk in.
I also must mention that Insomnia Cookies is a franchise, and that being said, you could have a completely different experience at your local college campus
