God Made Me Funky

Woo Child....

So I did say that the music at Funk N Waffles was another blog another time, and here it goes. The first few time that I actually attempted to go to Funk N Waffles I ended up turning around and leaving. Because as I approached the stairs I was scared off by the crowd of what looked like to be rowdy teens. ( This was before I had experienced my first small venue concert Gym Class Heroes) One day my friends and I made it down the stairs to the doors but when we looked in there was barely standing room…so we turned around. Big Mistake…( why didn’t I know what great live music FNW had)

So on the night of 10/4/08 there was a band scheduled to play God Made Me Funky (GMMF)…I mean we weren’t really planning on staying for the concert, just a dine and dash (after paying of course). But as we started eating the house band (Sophistafunk) started playing , and the keyboardist (Adam-one of the owners of FNW) was amazing and it was easy to see that the emotion and devotion he was playing with was real. They have a very soulful sound, one reminiscent of the late 70’s early 80’s (the exact song that comes to mind actually is “Everybody was kung fu fighting….HA)

Here’s a description of Sophistafunk from Jack Brown ( the vocalist):
"The
main theme to all this is we're doing something totally different and outside
the box. You're gonna be feeling funk, reggae, hip hop, dance music - it's all
mixed in there. It's a modern style, but it's also got an old-school feel to
it."

"There is nothing better than listening and watching something so beautiful be created and seeing the creators enjoy the process"-Me

So anyways they were playing and they were really good and we decided to stay and see the other band GMMF. They were also great. They gave a very theatrical performance there were three vocalist …one reminded me of a mix between Rev Run and Humpty Dumpty ( not the egg), the other looked similar to Lenny Kravitz, and the third reminded me of a mix of Twiggy and the girl from The Ting Tings (“Shut up and let me go”). Seriously not one more person could fit on that stage there was like 10 band members up there.

A little background on GMMF….they are a band from Canada (dontcha know). They started back in ’98 and were recently nominated for a JUNO award (which I guess is the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy’s). Congrats guys!

They played some original music as well as some covers. There weren’t very many people at FNW that night but I’m pretty sure every one that was there had a great time.

Oh and I Also have to give a shout out to the money guy at the door in that great bowl hat. When we paid we all got sweet designs on our hands instead of that very played “x”…you completed the experience dude…I’ll post those pics later.
